Shopify reported that AI-driven search is boosting traffic and sales for its merchants, rather than replacing traditional search engines. On August 5, 2026, during its second-quarter earnings call, the company announced that AI-referred traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year in the quarter. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein stated that AI has become a “complement to search, rather than a substitute for it,” benefiting the long tail of e-commerce, including smaller merchants. This stands in contrast to the publishing industry, where AI summaries have reduced click-through rates and advertising revenue. Shopify’s revenue rose 36% to $3.6 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s forecast of $3.4 billion, while gross operating profit increased 31% to $1.71 billion, exceeding expectations of $1.63 billion. Finkelstein explained that AI agents use richer structured data to match products with buyer intent, unlike traditional search engines that rank by popularity against keywords. He gave an example: when a buyer asks for the best car seat that fits three across a sedan, an AI agent understands dimensions, vehicle type, and quantity, searching across all constraints at once. This capability compresses shopping journeys, with half of all AI-referred sessions landing directly on product description pages—2.5 times more than traditional search. Additionally, 75% of AI-attributed purchases in Q2 occurred outside the top 100 categories, which Shopify calls its “sweet spot.” The company also highlighted its trusted checkout experience as a potential advantage as AI plays a larger role in transactions. Shopify has built connectors to AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, and Vercel, as well as vibe-coding platforms such as Lovable, allowing merchants to build on Shopify in various ways. Traditional search remains a major traffic source, with sessions up 1.3 times over the past two years and holding roughly a third of all storefront sessions, according to Finkelstein. The company’s strong results suggest that AI search is enhancing, not cannibalizing, its business, positioning Shopify to benefit from the evolving role of AI in e-commerce.
