Reddit launches AI moderator Rules Hub for new subreddits

Reddit on August 5, 2026 began testing an AI-powered moderation tool called Rules Hub across all new subreddits, moving beyond the keyword-based Automoderator to enforcement driven by large language models.

Rules Hub evaluates whether a post or comment matches the intent of a rule, bypassing the exact pattern-matching that has limited the legacy system. The tool is optional for new communities, spokesperson Rosa Kim said.

More than 700 communities, including participants from Reddit’s Mod Council Network, have already tested Rules Hub. Reddit said the tool, along with newer systems like Post & Comment Guidance and Safety Filters, could eventually replace many Automoderator enforcement workflows. A wider rollout across the site is planned for later in 2026.

Also on August 5, Reddit announced that new third-party apps will gradually be required to use its Developer Platform instead of the public API. All API apps will be affected except those granted explicit exceptions, Kim said, though no timeline has been set for the transition.

The developer platform shift follows Reddit’s controversial API changes in 2023, which forced many third-party apps to shut down and sparked widespread backlash.

Reddit is also planning new limits on old Reddit to fight unauthorized scraping, according to Kim. Short-term measures include restricting access to logged-in users and migrating critical bots and moderator workflows. The company has already blocked search engines that refuse to pay, sued Anthropic and Perplexity, and barred the Internet Archive to prevent AI data scraping.
