Blue Origin traced the May 28, 2026, failure of a New Glenn rocket to a main oxygen valve on a BE-4 engine, Chief Executive Dave Limp said on August 6, 2026. The anomaly occurred during a hot-fire test at Cape Canaveral, Florida, destroying the rocket and most of the launch pad infrastructure at Launch Complex 36-A. Hardware recovery and inspections confirmed the valve’s role, Limp added. The company is conducting component-level and engine hotfire tests to understand the failure mode. The company is making small modifications to the valve that can be retrofitted to existing engines, with updated hardware expected by the end of August 2026. Limp cautioned that the root cause had not yet been identified, as fault tree analysis continues. Parallel to the investigation, Blue Origin is clearing debris and rebuilding the launch tower. Multiple sources described a sense of urgency and significant spending. Founder Jeff Bezos has set a goal of returning New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026, a timeline that remains extremely ambitious. Tory Bruno, Blue Origin’s president of national security, said on August 5, 2026, that the next flight could carry the company’s Blue Ring spacecraft, which is in final build for a flight this year. New Glenn is critical to Blue Origin’s future, NASA’s lunar base plans, and the commercial industry’s need for launch alternatives to SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
