SpaceX rocket debris crashes into Moon at 5,400mph

Images captured by South Korea’s Danubri lunar orbiter reveal the Moon’s surface before and after a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage plowed into it on August 5, 2026. The Korean AeroSpace Administration (KASA) shared the photos.

The rocket debris — roughly the size of a five-story building and weighing about 4,000 kg — slammed into the lunar surface at approximately 06:35 GMT, traveling at an estimated 5,400 mph (8,700 km/h). The collision produced a brief flash too faint for backyard telescopes, though larger observatories are now studying the data.

SpaceX said the impact was not intentional. The upper stage had been adrift since January 2025, when it launched from Florida carrying two lunar landers. After pushing the landers toward the Moon, the stage was left in a looping orbit. Over 18 months, subtle gravitational tugs from the Earth, Moon and Sun gradually nudged it onto a collision course.

Astronomer Matt Bothwell of the University of Cambridge warned that growing orbital clutter poses broader risks. “Space is getting more and more crowded,” he said, cautioning that within decades it could become difficult to navigate past Earth’s orbit.

Separately, the Falcon 9’s reusable first-stage booster from the same January 2025 flight is scheduled to lift off again on August 10. That mission aims to carry 29 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit, marking the booster’s 18th flight.
