Jony Ive's first OpenAI gadget is a hockey puck-sized smart speaker

OpenAI and Jony Ive, Apple's former design chief, are developing a battery-powered smart speaker without a display, Bloomberg reported on August 6, 2026. The device is shaped like a doughnut and is roughly the size of a hockey puck.

Priced above $300, it is expected to hit the market in 2027.

The speaker will feature moving parts — some of which move autonomously to indicate when it is responding — along with lights, a camera system and other sensors.

Designed for portability, the gadget can be carried around the home with one hand, similar to Amazon's discontinued Tap speaker.

It will operate like ChatGPT's voice mode on smartphone apps but with more advanced models for humanlike interaction, and it will have a unique look distinct from Apple products.

The device may be the first in a planned family of OpenAI products, with more details expected before its release.
