Scientists have captured the most detailed images yet of the Sun's surface, revealing swirling vortices that drive space weather. The observations were made using the Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii and published in the journal Nature on August 5, 2026.

The images show a phenomenon called Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, where hot gases sliding past each other create spiraling whirlpools. These twisting motions, according to NSO astronomer Dr. David Kuridze, build up magnetic energy that can trigger large-scale explosions like flares and coronal mass ejections.

Understanding these dynamics is crucial because space weather can disrupt power grids and satellites on Earth, and even endanger astronauts. Dr. David Boboltz of the US National Solar Observatory emphasized that the Sun is the source of that energy, and studying its physics down to the smallest scales is key to predicting such events.

The telescope's high-altitude location on a Hawaiian peak provided clear, dust-free skies for the observations. Dr. Friedrich Woeger, also from the NSO, explained that the findings also shed light on why the Sun's surface is so hot, showing how energy is transported upward until it is released in violent outbursts.

Beyond practical protections, Boboltz noted that the Sun serves as a unique laboratory for fundamental physics, recalling that the first proof of Einstein's general relativity came from solar eclipse observations. The new images mark a step forward in both applied and theoretical solar science.
