Spirit rover's broken wheel reveals silica evidence of ancient hot springs on Mars

NASA's Spirit rover, which had been exploring Mars since 2004, made a major scientific discovery after its front wheel stopped working. Engineers adapted by driving the rover backwards, dragging the dead wheel through the Martian soil. This unintended plowing uncovered bright, silica-rich soil near a location called Home Plate in the Columbia Hills of Gusev Crater. The discovery, announced in 2007, points to past hydrothermal activity, such as hot springs or steam vents, that could have supported microbial life. The silica deposits were identified by Spirit's Miniature Thermal Emission Spectrometer and confirmed by its Mössbauer spectrometer. The find is significant because it provides strong evidence of a water-rich, potentially habitable environment in Mars' ancient past. The rover's wheel failure, initially a setback, turned into a serendipitous opportunity. Spirit continued operating until 2010, when it fell silent after getting stuck in soft soil. The silica discovery remains one of the mission's most important findings, influencing later Mars exploration strategies.
