Heart Aerospace's X1 demonstrator, the largest battery-electric plane ever built, completed its first flight on August 13, 2026. The prototype took off from Plattsburgh International Airport in Upstate New York, flew for 27 minutes, and reached an altitude of 1,100 feet using only battery power. According to the company, the entire flight—including takeoff and landing—consumed less than $5 worth of electricity.

The flight showed that battery-electric propulsion can handle takeoff, cruise, and landing, a key hurdle for electric aviation. Heart is developing the ES-30, a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft; the X1 is a scaled-down demonstrator for that larger model.

Executives at United Airlines and Air Canada have expressed interest in adding electric planes to their fleets. Heart aims to offer cheaper operating costs than current regional turboprops such as the Embraer ERJ. It projects an all-electric range of 125 miles for the ES-30, extending to 500 miles with a hybrid engine. Lower electricity costs, reduced maintenance, and improved motor reliability are central to its business case. Heart also envisions the ES-30 initially flying with a single pilot, with autonomous operation possible in the future.

The company targets 2031 for the ES-30 to enter service, a timeline it describes as ambitious by aviation standards. It faces competition from Boom Supersonic, Harbour Air, ZeroAvia, and Rolls-Royce. Industry observers noted in 2021 that electric flight depends on batteries becoming significantly denser and lighter than current models.
