Apple is in talks to pay publishers to use their content to power the upcoming Siri AI, The Wall Street Journal reported on August 13, 2026.

In the months before that date, the company approached publishers about giving Siri access to current news and information. The proposal would compensate publishers when their content is used, rather than through a fixed licensing fee—a departure from the industry norm of guaranteed payments for broad content access.

Apple has considered a nine-figure budget for the payments, according to the Journal.

The discussions come as Apple works to significantly enhance Siri after years of promising a smarter assistant. Siri AI is expected to roll out later in 2026.

Apple did not immediately respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.
