Microsoft merges Copilot apps into unified super app

Microsoft said on August 13, 2026 that it is merging its Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into a single AI assistant application, the first step toward a planned “super app” later in 2026.

The unified app keeps the Microsoft Copilot name but gets a new icon and interface. It combines Copilot chat and image creation with Microsoft 365 work capabilities, affecting both consumer and commercial users.

Existing Microsoft Copilot users will move to the updated app with their chats and content intact. Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will see minor navigation changes and gain access to Copilot chat. People who use both apps will have their chats and content merged, though personal and work data remain separate within the app.

A worldwide rollout for mobile and web apps starts in mid-August 2026, with Windows and Mac apps following in mid-September 2026. Some Windows Insiders will see updates during the week of August 13, 2026, and mobile users will be prompted to download the new Copilot app.

Some features will not carry over. Podcasts and Deep Research are being retired and will be unavailable after August 18, 2026. Group Chat threads, messages, and content also will not transfer after August 18, 2026. Shopping and Copilot Health may be temporarily unavailable during the rollout.

Enterprise security, compliance, and government controls remain unchanged. Users can still switch between personal Microsoft accounts and work or school Microsoft Entra ID accounts, which stay entirely separate. Core Copilot capabilities remain free, though some users may see different usage limits.

The update follows Microsoft's appointment of a new Copilot chief to oversee consumer and commercial sides, and moves Copilot toward a more commercial interface than the design introduced in 2024 after Mustafa Suleyman joined as Microsoft AI chief.
