Google Walkout Organizers Expose Toxic Culture in New Memoir
On August 4, 2026, an excerpt from Claire Stapleton’s book Don’t Be Evil: Bad Bosses, Fake Promises, and My Escape From Big Tech (William Morrow) revealed that the 2018 Google Walkout was organized in just five days by Stapleton and a small group of colleagues.
Stapleton, then a YouTube employee, created a Google Group on October 27, 2018. Within hours, hundreds of workers joined. She and project manager Tanuja, engineer Amr, and Meredith Whittaker set the walkout for November 1, 2018.
The organizers sent a survey asking why people were upset. It collected more than 350 anonymous accounts of harassment, pay inequity, and HR failures. Those stories became the centerpiece of the protest, which thousands of Google employees joined at offices worldwide.
The walkout challenged what Stapleton calls a “veil” of progressive values that she says concealed systemic discrimination and retaliation.
The action came amid broader tensions at Google. Employees had opposed Project Maven, a Pentagon AI contract that Amr and Whittaker had fought. The protest also followed a New York Times report on large exit packages for executives accused of misconduct.
