Siri AI arrives in iOS 27 beta with personal context understanding

In July 2026, Apple released a consumer beta of iOS 27, delivering long-promised AI upgrades to Siri. The updated assistant can locate photos, emails, texts, and calendar items from vague descriptions, and extract information from saved images such as a driver’s license or QR code.

Despite these advances, the launch feels anticlimactic as the AI industry has progressed to autonomous coding and multi-step reasoning. Apple partnered with Google to use Gemini AI models, refining them into proprietary Foundation Models that run on Apple Silicon and its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure.

Siri now engages in natural back-and-forth exchanges, with adjustable voice pacing and expressivity. Users can type or use a dedicated app, and the assistant reliably plays requested songs or podcasts, suggests recipes based on fridge contents, and answers location-specific queries about concerts or events.

Pointing the iPhone camera at objects allows Siri to identify them or calculate a shared restaurant bill. The system also opens websites and controls apps for navigation, photo editing, email drafting, and more.

Before this update, Siri often bungled simple commands and defaulted to web searches. The current version fulfills Apple’s original ambition but feels more like a long-overdue bug fix than a breakthrough.

The general public will get the new Siri when iOS 27 officially ships, expected in September 2026.
