Apple developing iPhone-Windows copy-paste feature by fall 2027
Apple is developing a feature that will allow seamless copy-paste between iPhones and Windows PCs, with completion targeted for fall 2027. The initiative follows a request from Microsoft under the European Union's Digital Markets Act interoperability system.
Microsoft asked Apple in March for a mechanism granting an app persistent clipboard access to transfer content between connected devices, without requiring the app to be in the foreground or repeated user permissions. The request was made through Apple's EU interoperability request system for developers, which the company launched to comply with the Digital Markets Act.
In a response dated June 26, Apple confirmed it will introduce a solution using its AccessorySetupKit, which already enables third-party smartwatches to receive iPhone notifications. Users will need to consent once to share a clipboard with each paired accessory, streamlining the experience.
Apple described the development as a "significant engineering effort" and aims to finish the work by fall 2027, followed by beta testing for a wide release in the European Union. Availability outside the EU remains uncertain.
Currently, Apple's universal clipboard feature allows easy copying and pasting between Apple devices, such as an iPhone and a MacBook, by highlighting content on one device and pasting it on another. Microsoft sought a similar experience for Windows PCs and iPhones.
The feature will rely on AccessorySetupKit, which handles accessory pairing and permissions, ensuring users only need to grant clipboard access once per device. This addresses Microsoft's request for persistent access without repeated foregrounding or permission prompts.
