SpaceX rocket stage crashes into moon at 5,400 mph

A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage crashed into the moon on August 5, 2026, at approximately 2:35 a.m. Eastern time, traveling at 5,400 mph. Confirmation from telescope observations was pending because signals take time to return from the moon.

The impact occurred near Einstein Crater on the moon’s western limb, an area often difficult to observe from Earth. Experts said the collision likely carved a new crater and kicked up a dust plume illuminated by sunlight, though spotting it from Earth would be challenging.

The upper stage was part of a Falcon 9 that launched in January 2025 from Florida, carrying two lunar landers. After completing its mission, the stage dumped its remaining fuel and could no longer be steered. It drifted uncontrollably, joining thousands of other pieces of orbital debris.

NASA spokesperson Jimi Russell said there was no danger to Earth, and the agency planned to track the booster for training and later observe the impact site for science. Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX’s director of NASA science missions, said the company had performed standard safety maneuvers, but a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces altered the stage’s trajectory.

In late July 2026, the European Space Agency reported that more than 46,000 pieces of debris totaling 17,000 tonnes orbit Earth. Rocket launches release ozone-depleting chemicals and soot that warms the atmosphere, warned Eloise Marais, an atmospheric chemist at University College London, in 2025.

The unintentional crash follows a Chinese rocket impact in March 2022 and NASA’s intentional strikes in 2009 and the 1970s for seismic studies. NASA and SpaceX are discussing ways to prevent future lunar impacts, as the Artemis program aims to build a lunar base and send crewed missions later this decade.
