A four-tonne SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage, the size of a school bus, slammed into the Moon on August 5, 2026, gouging a new crater and offering scientists a rare look at a high-velocity cosmic collision, tracking data confirmed.

The debris, the second stage from a launch in early 2025, hit near the Einstein Crater at roughly 8,700 kilometres per hour (5,400 miles per hour), releasing energy equivalent to about three tonnes of TNT, based on orbital trajectories mapped by independent astronomers and verified by space-tracking agencies.

Typically, spent rocket hardware is guided to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere or splash down in remote ocean zones. But over 18 months, gravitational tugs from the Sun, Earth and Moon gradually shifted the stage’s path, putting it on an unavoidable collision course.

SpaceX said the trajectory was unintentional but could not be prevented because of limited remaining fuel. On August 3, 2026, Julianna Scheiman, director of NASA science and Dragon programmes at SpaceX, told reporters that a combination of solar activity and gravity had steered it toward the Moon.

Orbital observation craft, including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri spacecraft, adjusted their sensors to document the crash site. Although daylight on the lunar surface hid the impact flash, the orbiters plan to survey the ejected dust plume and capture high-resolution before-and-after images of the new crater.

Space tracking expert Bill Gray told The Associated Press the event poses no immediate danger but highlights carelessness in disposing of leftover space hardware, adding that “things are getting crowded up there.”

The August 5 crash is only the second known accidental lunar impact by discarded rocket debris. The first occurred on March 4, 2022, when a Chinese Long March 3C rocket stage struck the Moon’s far side, carving an unusual double crater.
