NASA Gives Blue Origin $700M Contract for Mars Orbiter

NASA has selected Blue Origin to build a new telecommunications orbiter for Mars under a firm-fixed-price contract worth up to $700 million, the agency announced this week. The spacecraft, called the Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO), will be built on Blue Origin's existing Blue Ring platform and must be delivered to NASA by December 31, 2028.
Once launched, the MTO will orbit Mars and serve as a high-bandwidth relay station, transmitting science data, imagery and navigation information between Earth and spacecraft operating on or around the Red Planet. NASA expects the network to become fully operational by 2030, according to the agency's Space Communications and Navigation program.
The award follows a request for proposals NASA issued in May, part of a broader push to expand communications infrastructure beyond Earth and the Moon. It is the latest example of NASA leaning on commercial partners, alongside SpaceX and others, to build out deep-space infrastructure rather than developing every system in-house.
Why now: Mars missions currently depend on aging orbiters -- including the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and MAVEN, both well past their original design lifetimes -- to relay data from surface missions back to Earth. Those spacecraft were never designed as dedicated communications relays, and NASA has said for years it needs purpose-built infrastructure before bandwidth demand outpaces capacity.
Why it matters: A dedicated telecom orbiter would give scientists faster, more reliable access to data from current and future Mars missions, and lay groundwork for NASA's long-term ambitions to send astronauts to the planet. The agency has tied the MTO award to its plans for sustained robotic and eventual human exploration of Mars, meaning the network's capacity will need to scale well beyond what today's rovers and landers require.
Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has increasingly competed for NASA contracts alongside its commercial launch and lunar lander work. The Mars orbiter award adds a new line of business for the company in deep-space communications infrastructure, an area historically dominated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and legacy contractors.
NASA has not released an official mission patch or spacecraft rendering for the new orbiter; artist concepts are expected closer to the mission's development milestones.
