A nonprofit group called Fermi Explorer Mission announced on September 1 that it intends to launch the first human-made spacecraft toward another star system, targeting Alpha Centauri, the closest star system to our own at 4.4 light-years away. The mission's stated goals are to launch before the end of 2029, spend less than $15 million total, and carry a payload of at least 1 kilogram in a 10x10x10 centimeter package.

The trajectory was designed with help from Physical Superintelligence (PSI), an AI-native physics research lab that emerged from stealth the same day with $58 million in seed funding led by Breakthrough Energy. According to the mission team, PSI's AI system spent about 10 billion tokens over one week to discover what it calls a "perihelion-pump maneuver": the spacecraft would spiral outward from Earth for roughly 12 years, gaining speed through repeated gravitational assists near the sun, before a final burn sends it toward Alpha Centauri at around 24 kilometers per second, faster than Voyager 1 or Voyager 2 reached interstellar space. Mission organizers say NASA consultants have validated the physics.

Even at that speed, reaching 99% of the distance to Alpha Centauri would take the probe roughly 80,000 years. The mission's budget relies on donations, including $100 contributions in exchange for having a name etched onto the spacecraft. The payload is planned to include scientific instruments, artistic contributions, a tribute similar to the Golden Record carried by the Voyager probes, and messages from children around the world coordinated through national space agencies.

The team, led by mission president Philip Johnston, chose Alpha Centauri over the closer Proxima Centauri because Alpha Centauri's two sun-like stars emit roughly 2,000 times more energy, which organizers say makes the system more promising for eventual human interest. Johnston has described the mission as "mostly autonomous," saying that once the spacecraft leaves the solar system, "everything powers down, and it just goes."

Organizers frame the project as a practical, low-cost step toward interstellar travel and a response to the Fermi Paradox: the question of why, given the vast number of stars, humanity has found no evidence of other civilizations.
