NASA's Meir, ESA's Adenot Complete ISS Spacewalk

NASA astronaut Jessica Meir and ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot switched their spacesuits to battery power at 7:30 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, beginning a spacewalk outside the International Space Station that lasted roughly six and a half hours, according to NASA.
The two spacewalkers' main task was replacing a retroreflector on the forward port of the station's Harmony module, a component used to help spacecraft navigate during rendezvous and docking. They also installed jumper cables to boost the station's data-relay systems, prepared the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer's radiator for future maintenance, and replaced a high-definition camera on the station's truss, NASA said.
Adenot served as extravehicular crew member 1, identifiable by the red stripes on her suit, while Meir served as crew member 2 in an unmarked suit. It was the seventh spacewalk of Meir's career and the third for Adenot. NASA said the outing moves Meir into third place among women astronauts at the agency for total spacewalks, trailing Peggy Whitson's 10 and Suni Williams' nine.
NASA logged the excursion as the 284th spacewalk conducted in support of space station assembly, maintenance and upgrades since 1998. Space.com's coverage described the event as the sixth all-female spacewalk in history, though NASA's own release did not use that characterization, instead framing it as a joint NASA-ESA maintenance outing.
Live coverage of the spacewalk streamed on NASA's website and other platforms starting at 7 a.m. EDT.
