Ford's $28,000 Fathom EV nears production after $2B factory overhaul

Ford’s $28,000 Fathom electric pickup will enter production at the automaker’s overhauled Louisville Assembly Plant in the first quarter of 2027, the company said on August 13, 2026. The first vehicles off the line will be prototypes, with the Louisville team already in the production-level pre-tooling phase.

Factory workers are hand-building those initial units alongside teams from Ford’s New Model Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan, and the same operators who helped design the vehicle will be involved in its production. Ford converted the more than 70-year-old Louisville site from gas-powered models such as the Escape and Lincoln Corsair to EV-only output in just under a year; crews hauled out heavy machinery over several weeks, leaving an empty shell by February 2026.

The Fathom is the first vehicle on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, which the company has described as its “Model T moment” for the 123-year-old automaker. The platform is designed to maximize aerodynamic range and cut production costs so the vehicle can be profitable. Ford is spending $5 billion to create 4,000 new jobs at the Louisville factory and its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan.

A new assembly tree process splits the vehicle into front clip, rear clip, and battery deck, allowing more operators to work simultaneously. Large unicasting will form the front and rear sections, replacing dozens of stamped and welded parts and speeding production by up to 15 percent, Ford said. A software module flash station—a first for a Ford assembly plant—uses private 5G to run quality tests as vehicles move down the assembly tree, eliminating a process that previously took 10 minutes per vehicle for updates after the vehicle was built.

Ford has lost more than $5 billion on EVs and software in 2024 and another $4.8 billion in 2025. The company was forced to cancel the F-150 Lightning, once heralded as the most important EV ever made, and is betting that the streamlined production process and its high-volume manufacturing expertise will make the Fathom’s retail price a reality.
