In July 2025, researchers successfully extracted water from lunar soil and used sunlight to split it into breathable oxygen and rocket fuel, eliminating the need to transport water from Earth. This breakthrough was reported by Space Daily, highlighting a major step toward sustainable lunar exploration.

The achievement directly affects future lunar missions, including NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. By producing water on-site, astronauts can generate oxygen for life support and hydrogen for fuel, drastically reducing the cost and logistical burden of resupply from Earth. Currently, launching a single gallon of water from Earth costs an estimated $83,000.

The experiment involved heating lunar soil—known as regolith—to release water vapor, which was then split into hydrogen and oxygen using concentrated sunlight. The process yielded both breathable air and a potential propellant for rockets. This method could support a permanent lunar base by providing essential resources without relying on Earth shipments.

This development builds on decades of research into in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), a key strategy for affordable space exploration. Previous studies had confirmed the presence of water ice in permanently shadowed craters on the Moon, but this is the first time water has been extracted directly from soil and converted into usable products in a single, sunlight-driven process.

Looking ahead, the team plans to scale up the technology for use in future lunar missions. If successful, it could enable astronauts to produce their own water, oxygen, and fuel on the Moon, paving the way for more ambitious deep-space exploration, including missions to Mars.
