A global firestorm incinerated dinosaurs within hours of the asteroid strike that formed the Chicxulub crater, according to research published on 28 July 2026. The findings challenge the view that a slow climate shift killed them.

Superheated debris, blasted into the atmosphere by the impact, rained down across the planet. It turned the sky into an oven and ignited worldwide fires that roasted the animals almost instantly.

The study upends the long-held theory of a gradual, nuclear winter-like die-off. Instead, the extinction was swift and violent, with a dust cloud from the Chicxulub crater in present-day Mexico heating the atmosphere to lethal temperatures.

When the asteroid struck 66 million years ago, it vaporized rock. That dust radiated intense heat as it fell, causing surface temperatures to soar and setting the globe ablaze.

Earlier models had described prolonged darkness and cold that collapsed ecosystems. The new analysis, however, indicates that the initial thermal pulse was the primary killer, destroying habitats and directly killing dinosaurs within hours.

The mass extinction was more abrupt than previously thought, the research suggests. Future studies may explore how other species survived the firestorm and what that means for life's recovery.
