SpaceX nears deal for 130,000 acres of Louisiana marshland

SpaceX is set to acquire about 130,000 acres of marshland in southern Louisiana, with Governor Jeff Landry expected to announce the agreement in August 2026, The Times-Picayune / The New Orleans Advocate reported on Aug. 3, 2026.

The deal would give the company control of an 18-mile stretch known as Pecan Island, southwest of Lafayette, as part of a legal settlement resolving dozens of lawsuits against ExxonMobil over pollution and coastal land loss.

Neither Louisiana officials nor SpaceX commented publicly. However, SpaceX said in May 2026 that it is exploring many locations to support thousands of Starship launches per year.

The site offers a vast undeveloped coastal expanse with deep-water access near the Intracoastal Waterway, providing a much-needed expansion of launch capacity beyond existing facilities in Texas and Florida.

Its southward-facing trajectory enables polar orbits, which pass near the poles and are likely required for the company’s planned orbital data center satellites. A Starship could reach such an orbit with only a short overland traverse over Mexico nearly 1,000 miles downrange.

Abundant methane propellant would be available, as Pecan Island lies just a few dozen miles south of the Henry Hub natural gas distribution hub.

In 2026, the Louisiana Legislature passed bills offering aerospace incentives, including liability protections and property tax breaks, which may have helped attract the deal.

The agreement is expected to include provisions for coastal restoration and preservation of the sensitive marshland, which serves as wildlife habitat and a hurricane buffer.

The project could raise environmental and logistical concerns similar to those at SpaceX’s Starbase in South Texas. There, economic impacts have been substantial: about 5,000 direct jobs and up to 24,000 indirect and direct jobs, along with a tourism boost.

Louisiana may hope for similar economic activity from the development.
