Joby's Autonomous Plane Crosses US in 3,199-Mile Flight

Joby Aviation announced on 18 September 2026 that an aircraft running its autonomy software flew 3,199 miles across the United States with zero control inputs from the safety pilot sitting on board. The aircraft, a converted Cessna Caravan, departed Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, California, and finished the eastbound leg of the company's month-long tour in North Carolina's Outer Banks, near the site of the Wright brothers' first powered flight. According to Joby's press release, the system handled taxiing, takeoff, route navigation and landing on its own.

The distance is the headline, but what happened along the route is the harder part. Joby says the aircraft rerouted around severe weather and thunderstorms in real time, and slotted into traffic at Phoenix Deer Valley, one of the country's busiest general aviation airports, without prior familiarity with the field. Human supervisors followed the flight from Joby's Autonomy Headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, at times 2,323 miles from the aircraft. The trip ended with a low pass by the Bodie Island Lighthouse near Kitty Hawk.

Joby is known for its electric air taxi, but this was a fixed-wing cargo aircraft, not that eVTOL. The autonomy system came out of Joby's 2024 acquisition of Xwing and has now logged more than 400 flights and over 800 automated flight hours, TechCrunch reported. Fitting autonomy to an airframe that is already certified, rather than certifying a new aircraft, gives Joby a nearer-term commercial route into freight, medical transport, disaster response and defence logistics. TechCrunch also reported that the system has flown in US Air Force exercises, including Agile Flag, where it delivered replacement parts 24 hours faster than conventional logistics, and REFORPAC in Hawaii, operated remotely from Guam nearly 4,000 miles away.

What the announcement does not settle is the regulation. A safety pilot was on board for every one of those miles, and Joby has not said when the same route might be flown with an empty cockpit. The company gave no timeline for autonomous passenger flights, and its air taxi work remains a separate, piloted programme. One more detail worth noting: TechCrunch rounded the distance to 3,100 miles in its headline, while Joby's own release and the aviation outlets AVweb and FlyingMag put the precise figure at 3,199 miles.
