Apple Ships iOS 27 With Siri AI, but Not for EU iPhones

Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, alongside iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and tvOS 27 — and with them the first public version of Siri AI, the assistant overhaul the company has been promising for years. In its newsroom announcement Apple described Siri AI as "a more capable and conversational assistant with personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness, and even more systemwide app actions." According to Apple, it can draw on context across messages, emails and photos, answer questions about what is on a user's screen, or go out to the web for up-to-date information. It also appears inside the iPhone Camera app as "Siri mode," which Apple says lets users get information and act on what is in front of them.

The release lands after repeated delays, and the hardware bar for the headline feature is narrower than for the operating system itself. MacRumors reported that iOS 27 installs on iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 11 and later, through Settings > General > Software Update. Apple's own list for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI is shorter: iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPads with M1 or later, MacBook Neo (A18 Pro), Macs with M1 or later, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Plenty of phones will therefore get the update without the feature that defines it.

Geography is the second dividing line, and Apple drew it by platform rather than by region alone. Apple stated that "Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language," while "Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS." Engadget described the same split, reporting that Siri AI and the features that depend on it across iOS, iPadOS and watchOS will not be available in the European Union at the outset, and that Apple is "working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users' privacy and security." In practice, an EU reader with an iPhone 16 can install iOS 27 but not use Siri AI, while the same person can use it on an M1 Mac. Engadget also reported that Siri AI is available at first only on supported devices set to English, and that app launches are up to 30 percent faster in the new release.

Apple has not published a date for Siri AI on iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch in the EU, nor a timetable for languages beyond English. Those two questions — when the EU restriction lifts and how quickly other languages arrive — are the ones to watch as the update reaches users at scale.
