Ternus, Not Cook, Fronts Apple's Sept. 9 Keynote as New CEO

Apple's "Surprise and Shine" keynote ran on Sept. 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and John Ternus presented it rather than Tim Cook. It was the first major product event of Ternus's tenure as chief executive, eight days after he formally took the job. According to coverage of the event by CNN and Fox Business, Apple introduced its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, plus updated wearables: the Apple Watch Series 12, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.
Ternus became CEO on Sept. 1, 2026. Apple's board had announced the succession on April 20, 2026, saying in its own statement that Cook, chief executive for 15 years, would move to executive chairman. Ternus joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and served as senior vice president of hardware engineering from 2021 until the handover, which made the September keynote his first extended test as the company's public face.
Two accounts of Cook's role that day do not match, and they are worth keeping apart rather than merged. In Bloomberg's Power On newsletter on Sept. 6, Mark Gurman reported that Cook would attend the event screening but would not appear in the presentation video itself. "Apple has carefully orchestrated this transition to make Ternus the face of the foldable iPhone and all the new products to come. Putting Cook in the presentation would just undermine that," Gurman wrote. Reporting from the event, including CNN's live coverage and Fox Business, instead described Cook appearing at the opening and pointing the audience to Ternus, who carried the rest of the presentation.
For customers, the keynote was the first look at how Apple frames its product roadmap under new management. For investors, it was an early read on whether Ternus can carry the market weight Cook did across a decade and a half, delivered on the day Apple put its most-anticipated new hardware in years on stage.
Several questions stay open. How the foldable sells once it reaches stores is untested. Whether Cook appears in future keynotes at all is unsettled, and the two accounts above pull in opposite directions on how visible Apple intends him to be. Apple's April statement said Cook would assist with certain aspects of the company as executive chairman, including engaging with policymakers around the world, but the company has not set out in detail how day-to-day responsibilities split between chairman and chief executive. The next concrete signals are the foldable's retail performance and whether Cook is on screen at Apple's next event. This is not investment advice.
