China has announced plans to slam a spacecraft into an asteroid at a speed of Mach 26, or roughly 20,000 miles per hour, as part of a planetary defense test. The mission aims to demonstrate the ability to alter the trajectory of a near-Earth object, a key capability for protecting the planet from potential future impacts. The target is a small asteroid named 2019 VL5, which is about 100 feet wide and poses no threat to Earth.

The test is expected to take place around 2025, with the spacecraft launching earlier to intercept the asteroid. This mission is China's first attempt at a kinetic impact deflection test, similar to NASA's DART mission, which successfully collided with the asteroid Dimorphos in 2022. The Chinese effort seeks to build on that success by targeting a different type of asteroid and using a higher impact speed.
