Jodrell Bank faces funding crisis risking UK physics brain drain
A funding crisis at Jodrell Bank Observatory reached a critical point on 28 July 2026, threatening the future of the world-renowned radio astronomy centre and risking a brain drain in British physics.
The University of Manchester, which operates the Cheshire site, said the observatory needs £15 million per year to maintain current operations but faces an £8 million shortfall for the 2026-27 fiscal year. Without urgent intervention, it may scale back research, reduce telescope hours and lose key staff.
More than 100 researchers, engineers and support staff are directly affected. The iconic Lovell Telescope, completed in 1957, costs £2.5 million a year to run and remains vital for tracking satellites and studying cosmic phenomena. The crisis also jeopardises Jodrell Bank’s leading role in the Square Kilometre Array, a global radio telescope network.
Jodrell Bank has been a cornerstone of British science since physicist Bernard Lovell founded it in 1945, using army-surplus radar to discover radio reflections from meteor trails. UNESCO designated the site a World Heritage Site in 2019. A brain drain would diminish the UK’s scientific standing and undermine economic growth, supporters say.
Shortfalls stem from reduced government grants, rising costs and the end of a major European research grant in December 2025. Post-Brexit exclusion from some EU research programmes since 2020 and flat-cash allocations that have not kept pace with inflation have eroded funding. In 2024, the Science and Technology Facilities Council warned that research capacity was eroding, but no extra support has been earmarked for Jodrell Bank.
On 28 July 2026, the university’s vice-chancellor confirmed urgent talks with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to secure a bridging loan. If no solution is found by September 2026, the observatory may suspend international collaborations, triggering an exodus of top researchers and a lasting blow to British science.
