NASA Opens First New Wind Tunnel in 40 Years
NASA inaugurated the Flight Dynamics Research Facility, its first major new wind tunnel in over four decades, on July 31, 2026. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, marking the start of operations for this advanced testing resource.
The facility is designed to serve NASA and its partners, including government agencies, industry, and universities, by enabling tests of scale-model aircraft, rockets, and space exploration vehicles. It supports research into aircraft safety, X-plane development, drones, and spacecraft technology, accommodating both free-flight and mounted experiments for vehicles that travel through an atmosphere.
This new wind tunnel matters because it modernizes and expands NASA’s testing capabilities, allowing researchers to study how vehicles behave during flight with greater accuracy. It replaces aging infrastructure with an energy-efficient building that reduces maintenance costs and provides flexibility for future research, ensuring the United States remains a leader in aeronautics and space exploration.
The Flight Dynamics Research Facility is a 25,000-square-foot building featuring a vertical wind tunnel with a 20-foot diameter test chamber. Its top airspeed is 117 miles per hour, twice as fast as the two historic tunnels it replaces—the 20-Foot Vertical Spin Tunnel and the 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel. The wind power comes from four 750-horsepower motors, each with a 14-foot diameter, eight-bladed fan made of lightweight carbon fiber, enabling rapid airspeed adjustments.
The facility was built through a partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration and is the fourth new building delivered under Langley’s 20-year campus revitalization plan. It combines and improves upon the capabilities of its predecessors, offering improved airflow, modern digital systems, and a larger test chamber that allows for more detailed models and better data accuracy.
Looking forward, the Flight Dynamics Research Facility will support NASA’s Artemis program and Moon Base development by testing entry, descent, and landing designs to reduce mission risk. It will also aid in designing aircraft for Mars and other destinations with atmospheres, advancing autonomous flight vehicles, commercial and military aircraft, and X-planes.
