Spider-Man: Brand New Day sets preview record with $72 million
Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” collected $72 million in preview screenings on July 29 and 30, setting a domestic box office record.
The haul eclipses the previous benchmark of $60 million set by 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
Analysts project the film will open to around $270 million domestically, with some forecasting an even higher number.
The last Spider-Man installment, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” earned $260 million in its 2021 debut — the second-biggest domestic opening ever — while “Endgame” holds the top slot with $357 million in 2019.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, described the demand as “nothing short of astonishing” but cautioned that strong fan front-loading could weigh on the full weekend figure.
“Brand New Day” forgoes Imax screens, which are booked for Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and instead relies on premium formats such as ScreenX, 4DX, Dolby Cinema and HDR by Barco.
ScreenX sold $1.8 million in tickets on July 30 and is on track to collect $4 million over the three-day debut; 4DX tallied $1.3 million and may reach $4.5 million.
The picture’s late-July arrival means the bulk of its box office will land in August — usually a slow month — delivering a jolt to the industry ahead of the autumn movie season.
Through July 26, the domestic box office had generated $5.6 billion in 2026, lagging 2019 by 16%.
Summer ticket sales stand at $3.05 billion, down 9% from $3.36 billion in 2019.
Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” hits theaters in November, and Warner Bros.’ “Dune: Part Three” paired with Disney’s “Avengers: Doomsday” arrives on Dec. 18.
