Natural history specimens linked to Darwin to be studied globally
A vast collection of biological specimens, some linked to Charles Darwin, has been made accessible to researchers globally, unlocking what scientists describe as a "hidden time-capsule of UK biodiversity." The collection, housed at the Natural History Museum in London, includes over 100,000 plant and animal samples gathered over the past two centuries, with some dating back to Darwin's era. These specimens, previously stored in cabinets and largely unavailable for study, are now being digitized and shared online.
The initiative, called the "Digital Collections Programme," aims to open up the museum's 80 million specimens to scientists worldwide. The first batch of digitized material includes 4,500 specimens collected by Darwin himself during his voyage on the HMS Beagle, as well as thousands of others gathered by Victorian-era naturalists. The project is expected to take decades to complete, but the initial release already provides a treasure trove of data on species distribution, climate change impacts, and evolutionary patterns.
Why this matters is that the collection offers a unique historical baseline for studying how UK biodiversity has changed over time. By comparing modern species with these historical samples, researchers can track shifts in populations, genetic diversity, and responses to environmental pressures. The museum's head of digital collections, Dr. Helen Hardy, stated that the specimens are "a time-capsule of UK biodiversity" that can help answer pressing questions about extinction risks and conservation priorities.
The project began in 2014 with a pilot phase, and the current release is part of a £5 million investment from the government's UK Research and Innovation agency. The museum plans to digitize all 80 million specimens eventually, but the process is slow due to the delicate nature of the materials and the need for high-resolution imaging. Next steps include expanding the online database to include more specimens and integrating the data with other global biodiversity databases, allowing scientists to conduct large-scale analyses of ecological change over centuries.
