Lilly widens obesity drug lead over Novo Nordisk to 60.9% market share
Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk both beat second-quarter estimates and raised their full-year outlooks, but the market reaction on August 6, 2026, highlighted a widening divide between the two GLP-1 drugmakers. Lilly shares rose, while Novo's fell a day earlier, reflecting diverging investor confidence in their obesity drug strategies.
Lilly held a 60.9% U.S. market share in obesity and diabetes drugs in the second quarter, compared with Novo's 38.8%, according to Lilly's earnings presentation. Lilly's revenue surged 48% from a year ago, driven by Mounjaro and Zepbound, and it raised its full-year revenue guidance, reinforcing its momentum.
Novo also topped expectations and lifted its outlook, citing increased GLP-1 product sales, but analysts noted benefits from rebate adjustments and temporary factors. Sales of Ozempic and the obesity portfolio exceeded estimates, but the Wegovy pill revenue slightly missed expectations, disappointing investors and raising doubts about its growth potential.
BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman said the pill's miss and share reaction highlight a need for further pipeline diversification, though Novo noted the pill has reached over 5 million patients since its U.S. launch in January. Novo CEO Mike Doustdar defended the strategy, and the company announced a Germany launch in September, its first EU entry.
Novo's updated outlook implies a possible sales decline this year, contrasting with Lilly's expected growth. Mixed trial results for CagriSema, which failed to match Zepbound's blood sugar control, and a late-stage heart drug failure added to concerns about Novo's pipeline and long-term growth.
Analysts at Citi said there was "nothing to inspire" in Novo's results, while Bernstein's Courtney Breen noted Lilly remains best positioned to capture global incretin market growth. The global market could exceed $100 billion by the 2030s, but Novo faces a show-me phase as investors await evidence of a turnaround.
