A new framework for interpreting how bones accumulate and change in underwater caves has been developed by researchers at Griffith University, according to a study published in PLOS One on August 4, 2026. The work provides the first reliable method for reading the preservation signatures left on skeletal remains in these submerged environments, which can hold exceptional records of extinct megafauna and other animals.
