GTA VI Extended Look: Rockstar finally shows real gameplay

Rockstar's "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" aired Thursday at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix, and went free to everyone on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official GTA VI site six hours later. Netflix said in its announcement that the showcase was captured "entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5" — no cinematic trailer padding, no developer talking heads, just the game itself.

The presentation settled the relationship at the story's center. Jason and Lucia are not strangers thrown together for a caper: they are a couple — an ex-military drug runner and a fighter fresh out of prison — and players switch between the two as dual protagonists. The official setup has an easy score going wrong and landing the pair "on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America," inside a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida, Rockstar's fictionalized Florida.

The systems shown lean into consequence. The pair's appearance visibly wears down over multi-day benders or extended stretches of fleeing police, and their weight and fitness shift with how they eat and exercise — the kind of simulation layer Rockstar built into Red Dead Redemption 2, now applied to both leads. The studio also says player choices carry consequences that cut deeper than in any of its previous games.

The broadcast capped the most chaotic pre-launch week the game has had: daily leaks from the "Cyberleek" persona, Rockstar's statement calling them "heartbreaking," and Take-Two subpoenas chasing the source. The Extended Look is the studio's first substantial official showing beyond two trailers since the December 2023 reveal — and it arrived with the November 19 release date once again confirmed.
