Hideo Kojima made a surprise appearance on the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on 17 September to name the actor at the centre of his next game. "I'm delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård," Kojima said in a statement published by Xbox Wire. "We are both long-time fans of each other's work, and we've decided to embark on this new adventure together." Kojima Productions published the same announcement on its own site the same day.

The studio named four actors: Skarsgård in the lead, alongside Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. Kojima also shared a new poster he photographed himself, featuring Skarsgård and Fraser. Neither Xbox nor Kojima Productions said which characters Fraser, Lee and Hamabe will play.

The timing is what gives the announcement weight. Eight days earlier, on 9 September, Xbox said it was expanding its partnership with Kojima Productions to publish Physint, an action-espionage title. "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life," Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said in that announcement. Kojima added that the deal "expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD." Game Developer reported on 10 September that PlayStation Studios had given the developer "an unexpected notice that it would cancel PHYSINT," and quoted Kojima saying his team had "spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner." The 9 September Xbox post did not mention PlayStation.

That context makes one line in Kojima's casting statement the most informative part of it. "The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project," he said — meaning performance-capture work on Physint was already under way before the publishing arrangement changed hands. For players who assumed a cancelled-then-rescued project would restart from scratch, that is a concrete signal in the other direction: the production has cast, scanned and tested its leads.

Kojima Productions describes Physint as its third original IP and a culmination of Kojima's four-decade career, aiming to set new standards for the action-espionage genre. The casting reveal sat inside a wide Xbox showcase that also included a same-day release of Shape of Dreams on Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass, a world premiere for Faraday Blues, a 23 October 2026 launch date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Persona 4 Revival on 18 February 2027 and Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember on 4 March 2027.

What is still missing is the part players most want. No release date or window for Physint has been given, and neither company detailed platforms beyond Xbox's role as publisher. Kojima Productions is also working with Xbox on OD - KNOCK, and the two companies have said the collaboration extends beyond games into film and television. The next real milestone will be the first gameplay footage — which nobody has committed to a date for.
