A new study reveals that electric vehicle batteries may last significantly longer than previously estimated, challenging earlier assumptions about their lifespan. Researchers at the SLAC-Stanford Battery Center analyzed data from 92 commercial EV batteries over two years and found that real-world driving conditions—such as stop-and-go traffic and varied charging habits—actually slow battery degradation, contrary to lab tests that often accelerate wear. This means EV owners could keep their vehicles for decades without needing a battery replacement, reducing long-term costs and environmental waste. The study, published in *Nature Energy* on December 9, 2024, used machine learning to predict that batteries could last up to 38% longer than lab projections. For example, a battery rated for 150,000 miles might now be expected to exceed 200,000 miles. Earlier research had suggested batteries would degrade faster due to frequent fast charging and high temperatures, but this new data shows that dynamic driving patterns help preserve capacity. The findings could influence automakers to extend warranties and encourage consumers to consider EVs more seriously. Next steps include further testing on different battery chemistries and real-world aging to refine predictions, potentially reshaping the EV market's economic and environmental outlook.
