Ford Motor Company announced on Thursday that it will integrate Apple Maps directly into its upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, beginning with a new midsize pickup truck expected to launch in 2027. The vehicle, priced around $30,000, will feature turn-by-turn navigation powered by Apple Maps, including natural language directions, real-time traffic updates, incident alerts, and detailed place cards. The system will also include intelligent EV routing and battery preconditioning to optimize charging stops.

This integration affects Ford's next-generation electric vehicles, starting with the affordable pickup, and will be available to all drivers of those vehicles. Unlike current setups that require an iPhone for Apple CarPlay, the new system will be built directly into the vehicle's dashboard, meaning drivers can access Apple Maps without needing a smartphone. However, Ford noted that CarPlay will still be supported for those who prefer it.

The move matters because it marks a deeper collaboration between Ford and Apple, moving beyond simple phone projection to embedded software. By using Apple Maps natively, Ford aims to offer a seamless navigation experience that competes with Tesla's in-house system and other automakers' proprietary solutions. It also signals Ford's strategy to leverage popular consumer technology to attract buyers to its EV lineup.

Ford did not provide specific details on other models that will adopt the platform beyond the 2027 pickup, nor did it disclose financial terms of the partnership. The announcement comes as Ford accelerates its EV push, with the Universal EV Platform designed to underpin multiple vehicles and reduce costs.
