Electric vehicles now account for nearly a quarter of all new car sales in Australia, driven by the ongoing Middle East fuel crisis and rising petrol prices. New data reveals that more EVs were sold in the first half of 2026 than in the entire previous year, marking a significant shift in consumer behavior.

According to figures from VFacts and the Electric Vehicle Council, 103,855 battery electric vehicles were sold between January and June 2026, surpassing the 103,269 sold in all of 2025. This surge means EVs now represent about 24% of new car sales, up from 18% last year. The trend is affecting both urban and regional buyers, with increased demand for models from Tesla, MG, and BYD.

The shift matters because it signals a structural change in Australia's automotive market, reducing reliance on fossil fuels amid global supply uncertainties. The Middle East crisis has pushed petrol prices to record highs, making EVs more cost-effective for daily commuters. Additionally, expanded charging infrastructure and government incentives have lowered barriers to adoption.

Background data shows that EV sales have been climbing steadily since 2023, but the pace accelerated sharply in early 2026. The Electric Vehicle Council attributes this to a combination of fuel price volatility and a wider range of affordable EV models entering the market.

Looking ahead, industry analysts expect EV market share to exceed 30% by year-end if petrol prices remain elevated. The federal government is also considering additional tax breaks for EV buyers, which could further accelerate adoption. However, challenges remain, including grid capacity and charging network reliability in remote areas.
