Battery materials company Sila has secured $300 million in new funding to scale up production of its advanced silicon-carbon anode material, a move that signals continued investor confidence in next-generation battery technology despite a broader slowdown in electric vehicle demand. The funding round, led by existing investors including Sutter Hill Ventures and 8VC, brings Sila's total raised to over $1.3 billion.

The new capital will be used to expand Sila's manufacturing facility in Moses Lake, Washington, which is expected to produce enough anode material to power more than 100,000 electric vehicles annually once fully operational. The company's silicon-based anode technology is designed to replace traditional graphite anodes, offering higher energy density that could extend EV range and reduce charging times.

This investment comes at a time when many automakers are scaling back EV production targets and battery startups face funding challenges. Sila's ability to raise significant capital suggests that investors see long-term value in technologies that can improve battery performance, even as near-term EV adoption slows. The company has already secured partnerships with major automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, which plans to use Sila's material in its electric G-Class SUV starting in 2025.

Sila's Moses Lake factory is expected to begin commercial production in 2025, with the new funding supporting the ramp-up to full capacity. The company aims to eventually supply multiple automakers and expand into other applications such as consumer electronics and energy storage. By focusing on incremental improvements to existing lithium-ion battery chemistry, Sila hopes to offer a practical path to better batteries without requiring entirely new manufacturing infrastructure.
