Shin Ohashi, 17, Swims 2:04.83 — First Man Under 2:05 in the 200

Japan's Shin Ohashi swam the men's 200-metre breaststroke in 2:04.83 at the Asian Games on Thursday, 24 September 2026, becoming the first man to finish the event under 2:05. The 17-year-old took 0.65 seconds off the world record of 2:05.48 that China's Qin Haiyang set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka.

The final was held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, the Tokyo pool staging the swimming programme of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Games. The organising committee, AINAGOC, confirmed the time and the gold medal in a notice on the official Games site. SwimSwam logged his splits as 28.27, 31.62, 32.51 and 32.43 — an opening 100 metres of 59.89. The 2:06 barrier itself fell only in 2022, when Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook swam 2:05.95, so the 2:05 barrier lasted four more years.

Denis Petrashov of Kyrgyzstan was second in 2:08.67, a national record and, SwimSwam reported, his country's first Asian Games swimming medal. Cho Sung-jae of South Korea took bronze in 2:08.76. Ohashi's previous best was the 2:06.59 world junior record he set at the Japan Swim earlier this year, so he cut 1.76 seconds off his own time in a single race.

Olympic historian Bill Mallon of Olympedia.org, quoted by Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports on Yahoo Sports, said Ohashi is the youngest man to break a world record in an individual long-course event since Michael Phelps first broke the 400-metre individual medley record in August 2002, when Phelps was also 17 but younger than Ohashi is now. The same report said Ohashi is the sixth different man to lower the 200 breaststroke mark in the past decade, a span in which the record has come down by 2.18 seconds in total.

Ohashi is listed at five feet six inches, about 1.68 metres, and is smaller than most of the field. The Associated Press noted that he had already broken Japan's national record in the 100-metre breaststroke earlier this year, a mark that had belonged to Kosuke Kitajima, a four-time Olympic champion. Qin, the man whose record he erased, did not swim this final, SwimSwam reported.

Earlier in the meet Ohashi shared the 100-metre breaststroke gold with China's Dong Zhihao, both touching in 58.64, with Qin third in 59.01. He made his senior international debut only in August, at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, where he was second in the 100 and third in the 200. Neither Ohashi nor his federation has said what he will target next. The official venue schedule ends the Games' swimming programme on 25 September, after which the same pool switches to diving.
