Eritrea's Seare Beats Ingebrigtsen to World 5km Title in 12:56

Eritrea's Dawit Seare won the men's 5km at the World Athletics Road Running Championships Copenhagen 26 on Saturday 19 September, running down Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the closing metres to break the tape in 12:56, an Eritrean national record. Ingebrigtsen crossed three seconds later in a Norwegian record of 12:59, and Seare's teammate Saymon Amanuel, still only 19, completed an Eritrean one-three with a personal best of 13:00.

France shaped the early race. Mediterranean Games 1500m champion Flavien Szot led through the first kilometre in 2:38 with European record-holder Jimmy Gressier tucked in behind, and the field passed two kilometres in 5:20 before Szot stepped off the course. Ethiopia's Mezgebu Sime charged to the front shortly before four kilometres, reached in about 10:20, and Seare took command for the long finishing drive. With around 30 seconds of running left, Ingebrigtsen moved past him into the lead; in the words of the official World Athletics report by Jon Mulkeen, for a few moments "it appeared that the Olympic 5000m champion had timed his move perfectly." Seare answered almost immediately, drew alongside and pulled clear.

The timing is what makes the result land. Ingebrigtsen was racing on his 26th birthday, eight days after winning the 5000m at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest — a title NBC Sports reports came seven months after Achilles surgery. Copenhagen was his third consecutive weekend of major championship racing and only his second road 5km ever; his first, six years ago, was a 13:28. His 12:59 was therefore an enormous improvement on his own road mark, and it still was not enough.

For Seare, the African 5000m champion this year, World Athletics described the win as completing his progression to the top of the global podium after he finished fourth at the inaugural World Road Running Championships in Riga three years ago, while still a teenager. The depth behind the podium tells the same story about how fast road 5km racing has become: Australia's Ky Robinson, who arrived in Copenhagen as Commonwealth 10,000m champion, finished fourth in an Oceanian record of 13:04, and Uganda's Keneth Kiprop matched that time for a personal best in fifth.

World Athletics has not published post-race comments from Seare or Ingebrigtsen, so the runners' own account of that final surge is still missing. Ethiopia took the mixed team title on the strength of Addisu Yihune and Mezgebu Sime in the men's race and Likina Amebaw and Aleshign Baweke in the women's. The championships run on in Copenhagen with the half marathon. Earlier on Saturday, Germany's Robert Farken won the men's road mile in a world-leading German record of 3:51.80, second on the world all-time list behind Elliot Giles' world record of 3:51.3, with American Yared Nuguse taking silver in a season's best 3:52.33.
