Real Madrid Win U20 Intercontinental Cup Before Record 52,117

Real Madrid beat Santiago Wanderers 3-1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, 19 September 2026 to win the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup for the first time. UEFA put the crowd at 52,117, the largest ever to watch the competition's final.

The match turned on an early dismissal. Santiago Wanderers defender Alexander Dubó was shown a straight red card in the 25th minute for a foul on Daniel Yáñez, and Yáñez scored directly from the resulting free-kick four minutes later. Christian Silva levelled for the Chilean side in the first attack of the second half, finishing from inside the box in the 49th minute.

Real Madrid's substitutes settled it. Fran Santamaría, on since the 80th minute, turned in a low cross from Fortea in the 81st for 2-1. Goalkeeper Fabiano Avello then saved a stoppage-time penalty from Yáñez, awarded after a VAR review for a push on Fortea, but in the ninth minute of added time Fortea set up Roberto Martín for the third. Wanderers finished with eight players: Valenzuela was sent off for a second booking in the 87th minute and Nicolás Carvacho received a straight red deep in stoppage time.

Why it matters: this was the first Under-20 Intercontinental Cup final played in Europe, according to UEFA, after four editions staged in South America — Montevideo in 2022, Buenos Aires in 2023 and Rio de Janeiro in 2024 and 2025. The move delivered a record attendance. Real Madrid said the previous best for a youth match, 45,656, was set at the Maracanã on 23 August 2025, when Flamengo beat Barcelona on penalties. Flamengo, winners in 2024 and 2025, remain the only club to have lifted the trophy twice; Benfica (2022) and Boca Juniors (2023) are the other winners.

The one-off final brings together the champions of Europe and South America at youth level. Real Madrid qualified as UEFA Youth League holders, having beaten Club Brugge 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the 2025/26 final in Lausanne. Santiago Wanderers earned their place by winning the CONMEBOL Libertadores Sub-20 in March 2026, the first Chilean club to take that title.

"That's part of Real Madrid's DNA, to go for the win until the very end, and luckily, it worked out," coach Álvaro López said in comments published by UEFA. The club said the victory completes a four-trophy 2026 for its Juvenil A side, alongside the UEFA Youth League, the domestic league and the Copa de Campeones.
