Meta used the opening of its Connect 2026 keynote on Sept. 23 to introduce Meta VR Glasses, a device the company says weighs about 100 grams — roughly the same as a deck of cards — and will go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99. It is Meta's attempt to move virtual reality out of a strapped-on headset and into something shaped like eyewear.

The weight comes from splitting the machine in two. The glasses carry the sensors and the display; a puck connected by an optical tether holds the compute, the battery and the storage, and clips to a pocket or bag. That means the 100-gram figure covers only what sits on the face, and Meta's claim that the device is \"five times lighter than Meta Quest 3\" compares a two-part system with a headset that carries all of it on the head.

Inside the frames are micro-OLED panels Meta calls a 5K Infinite Display, rated at 37 pixels per degree, behind ultra-compact pancake lenses built for this device. Dolby Vision handles the picture and Dolby Atmos spatial audio is built into the arms. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite processor runs the system from the puck, whose battery Meta rates at up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback with 45W fast charging. There are no controllers: eye tracking and hand gestures drive the interface, with a Meta AI agent built into the operating system.

The pitch is mostly about watching things. Meta says this is the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device, able to show selected films in IMAX's expanded aspect ratio at home. From November, the company says, Disney+ subscribers in selected countries can stream titles including Marvel's The Avengers and Black Panther in 3D, with themed viewing environments, alongside a separate Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM app. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are opening their 3D catalogues for the first time, and Meta says director James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision will debut \"first time in 3D\" blockbusters in 2027. Once the glasses launch, Meta says, more than 100 immersive live sports events a year will be available through MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.

For work, Meta describes a multi-screen private workspace that can turn any flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad. For gaming, it promises more than 75 titles playable with hand gestures at launch, plus hundreds more streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. A hologram calling feature renders a photorealistic version of the wearer into calls on apps such as WhatsApp and Zoom.

The same keynote brought Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses starting at $449 and available now, and a Muse Charm AI pendant Meta said would arrive in time for the holidays, according to Engadget's liveblog. What Meta has not published is a precise ship date inside spring 2027, pricing outside the United States, or any independent measurement of comfort and battery life. Everything announced on Sept. 23 rests on the company's own demonstrations.
