Nintendo's next Fire Emblem, Fortune's Weave, launches September 17, 2026 for Switch 2 with a structure that lets players swap between four heroes and their companions to tackle multiple storylines in a single playthrough. That is a sharp departure from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which asked players to pledge allegiance to one faction and see only that path.

The four playable heroes are Cai, a plucky teen fighting to save his imprisoned father; Dietrich, who wields a powerful sword and thirsts for combat; Theodora, strengthened by a magical arm; and Leda, a musician with a mystical vihuela bent on revenge. Each hero's artifact grants battlefield superpowers, such as Cai's flame burst that hits multiple enemies at a distance, but the weapons also carry a dark side that makes them ticking time bombs for their wielders.

The game opens with a fifth protagonist in a world ruined by a revived demon lord. That character must time travel back to the Heroic Games a few years prior so the four heroes can come to the protagonist's aid.

After 26 hours of play, the strategy and RPG elements have been excellent. But by chapter 5 of each character's story, many of the same quests, dungeons, and cutscenes appear across paths, making progression feel repetitive and at times a slog.

There is a narrative reason for the structure: because a player may only experience one path, each must be self-contained, and intersecting story threads have already emerged that are intriguing to see resolve.

The preparation phase in the capital city is engrossing. Players receive a calendar deadline for the next main quest battle and can spend days training, building bonds between characters, and exploring the world map. Battles include traditional top-down, grid-based strategy encounters and turn-based RPG battles inside dungeons. Big event battles serve as excellent capstones, though no real challenge has appeared yet on standard difficulty.

A single playthrough of Three Houses was about 50 hours, so Fortune's Weave could have a long way to go. Fire Emblem is now one of Nintendo's tentpole franchises, and the game arrives close to GTA VI in a crowded September. Despite the repetition, the game is expected to stand out from the crowd.
