Airbus has announced plans to test folding wings for the next generation of its best-selling aircraft, as the company races to finalize the design of future commercial planes by the end of the decade. The move addresses a key challenge: longer, thinner wings made from lightweight composite materials offer significant fuel savings but are too large to fit at many airports worldwide, which are already operating at or near full capacity.

The folding wing technology would allow the wings to be shortened on the ground for gate compatibility, then extended in flight for aerodynamic efficiency. This innovation is critical for Airbus to maintain its competitive edge against rival Boeing, as both manufacturers seek to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The planemaker has not specified which aircraft model would first feature the folding wings, but the technology is expected to debut on a future single-aisle jet, the successor to the A320 family.

Airbus has not disclosed a timeline for the tests or a specific launch date for the new plane. However, the company aims to have the design ready by 2030, with entry into service likely in the mid-2030s. The folding wing concept has been explored before—Boeing uses a similar system on its 777X—but Airbus’s application would be a first for a single-aisle aircraft, which represents the bulk of global air travel.

The next steps involve detailed engineering and certification work, as folding wings introduce new structural and safety considerations. Airbus will need to demonstrate that the mechanism is reliable and does not add excessive weight or maintenance costs. If successful, the technology could become a standard feature on future narrow-body planes, reshaping airport infrastructure and airline operations worldwide.
