Google parent Alphabet Inc. surprised investors on 28 July 2026 by lifting its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to as much as $205 billion, up from a prior projection of $190 billion.

The new range spans $195 billion to $205 billion, meaning even its lower end exceeds the old ceiling. The hike signals that spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure is escalating faster than anticipated.

Investors were rattled because the revision suggests Alphabet cannot accurately forecast its costs, adding uncertainty. The company is also spending more than it earns, deepening concerns about its AI gamble.

The spending surge reflects the financial strain of building data centers and acquiring chips to power AI models. It marks a shift from earlier optimism about AI monetization, as immediate returns have yet to match the massive outlays.

Competitors may face similar scrutiny over their own AI investments as analysts pressure Alphabet for clearer timelines to profitability.
