Serena and Venus Williams are returning together at the US Open

Serena and Venus Williams will play women's doubles together at the US Open, the tournament confirmed Wednesday, awarding the sisters a wild card into the draw. It will be their ninth US Open doubles appearance as a pair, and their first since 2022.

The reunion continues a comeback that began this summer. Serena, 44, returned to professional tennis this year after nearly four years away from the tour. She and Venus, 46, had planned to play doubles together at Wimbledon in July, but withdrew after Serena injured her knee during her first-round singles loss there. They got back on court together for the first time in nearly four years at the Cincinnati Open earlier this month, losing in the first round.

At the US Open specifically, the sisters carry a 27-7 record and titles from 1999 and 2009. Across their whole career as a doubles pair, they have won 14 Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals, a run stretching back to the late 1990s that makes them one of the most decorated partnerships in tennis history.

Serena's path back to Flushing Meadows this year is doubles-only. She did not receive a wild card into the singles draw; the tournament instead gave its final singles wild card to Sofia Kenin. Venus did get a singles wild card and will play both events.

The women's doubles draw begins September 3, with the final on September 11 — a week and a half in which two of the sport's defining champions share a court again, on the stage where they first won together.
