Anthropic Merges Cowork Into Claude, Adds Docs and Slides

Anthropic said on September 16, 2026 that Claude Cowork, the separate workspace it built for longer, hands-off tasks, is being folded into ordinary Claude chat. In a post titled "Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude," the company wrote that Claude "can now figure out what a task needs," so a single conversation can handle a one-line question or a report that runs for hours. Claude Docs and Claude Slides arrived the same day in beta, and Claude Design now works inside conversations as well.
Anthropic framed the merge as removing a decision users never wanted to make. "We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged," the announcement said. "So we stopped making you choose." The rollout is under way: Pro and Max plans get the change first on web, desktop and mobile "over the coming weeks," with Team and Free plans to follow. Enterprise administrators will get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes for their organisations, and they decide when to switch Docs, Slides and Design on. Claude Code, the company's tool for developers, stays separate, The Next Web reported.
For paying subscribers the practical shift is where the output lives. Claude Slides can be downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF, and Claude Docs exports to Microsoft Word or Google Docs, VentureBeat reported, but the documents themselves are web-native: they sit at a shared link rather than as a file on your machine. Anthropic says existing Cowork material carries over — chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills stay where users left them. Control settings move into chat too. By default Claude asks before it takes an action; users can opt in to letting it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look.
Several things are still open. Anthropic has not given a date for Team and Free users, saying only that they will follow soon, and no pricing change was announced alongside the launch. Docs, Slides and Design are labelled beta on paid plans, so early gaps are likely; VentureBeat reported that more export destinations are planned. Anthropic pointed users to Claude's Help Center for the full list of what the merged experience can do.
