A vast magma system containing approximately 6,000 km³ of volcanic fluids has been identified deep beneath Tuscany, according to a study published in Communications Earth & Environment on August 5, 2026. Researchers used ambient noise tomography to detect the material, which lies 8 to 15 km below the surface and had gone unnoticed because the region lacks typical surface warning signs like volcanic craters or gas emissions. The volume is equivalent to 2.4 billion Olympic swimming pools and is comparable to supervolcanic systems such as Yellowstone, though scientists say it poses no immediate threat. The international team, led by Matteo Lupi from the University of Geneva, included experts from the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG) and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). They deployed around 60 high-resolution sensors to record seismic waves from ocean, wind, and human activity, mapping slower wave speeds that indicated hot or partially molten rock. The discovery matters because it reveals a hidden magma body that could theoretically contribute to supervolcano development over geological time, and it demonstrates a cost-effective method for locating geothermal reservoirs and critical mineral deposits. The researchers note that deep magmatic systems are often linked to lithium and rare earth elements, which are essential for electric vehicle batteries and the energy transition. The findings suggest ambient noise tomography could become a useful tool for exploring the subsurface quickly and inexpensively, aiding both fundamental science and practical resource exploration.
