Spider-Man: Brand New Day scores $927M, second-biggest global opening
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $927 million in global ticket sales over the July 31–August 2 opening weekend, the second-largest debut in history.
Only Avengers: Endgame opened bigger, with $1.2 billion in 2019.
The film, starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, also set a North American opening record of $335 million, the continent’s second-highest.
It easily surpassed its $225 million production budget.
The strong showing gives Disney a welcome lift before the December release of Avengers: Doomsday, the studio’s culmination of multiple story arcs since Endgame. A string of Marvel films, including The Marvels and The Thunderbolts, had underperformed in recent years, though they recovered their costs.
Brand New Day picks up years after 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Peter Parker fighting crime in a world that has forgotten his identity. Critics largely praised the film, some calling it Holland’s best turn as the web-slinger.
The franchise remains a juggernaut: No Way Home generated nearly $2 billion in ticket sales.
Hollywood’s box office recovery has gathered pace. North American cinema takings are on track to surpass $10 billion in 2026 for the first time since before the pandemic, boosted by blockbusters Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, each topping $1 billion. July releases Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey are also expected to cross that mark.
Indie horror films Obsession and Backrooms became surprise hits, each grossing more than $390 million despite small budgets.
