Bright 'islands' in Titan's methane seas may be nitrogen bubbles, lab experiments suggest

New analysis of data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft has revealed that mysterious bright features appearing and disappearing in the methane seas of Saturn's moon Titan are likely fields of nitrogen bubbles. Laboratory experiments simulating Titan's conditions suggest that as the moon's frigid lakes warm or are stirred, dissolved nitrogen gas fizzes out of solution, creating transient bright patches on the liquid surface.

Titan is the only world besides Earth known to have stable liquid on its surface, with rivers, lakes, and seas of methane and ethane. The moon's surface temperature hovers around minus 180 degrees Celsius, cold enough to freeze water into rock-hard ice. Cassini's radar instrument spotted bright "islands" in the seas that would appear, vanish, and reappear over time, puzzling scientists.

Researchers recreated Titan's methane lakes in the lab, chilling liquid methane and ethane mixtures to Titan-like temperatures and pressures. They found that nitrogen, which makes up most of Titan's thick atmosphere, dissolves readily in the cold liquid. When the liquid warmed slightly or was agitated, nitrogen came out of solution as bubbles, forming bright patches on the radar—matching Cassini's observations.

These findings help explain the dynamic nature of Titan's hydrocarbon seas and could inform future missions. Titan is considered a prime target for exploration, with potential resources for a space colony. The moon's thick atmosphere and abundant carbon compounds make it a candidate for human outposts, though its surface receives only a thousandth of Earth's sunlight, creating a permanent golden twilight. Understanding the behavior of its seas is crucial for any future lander or submarine probe.
